6 Common Web Content Writing Mistakes – And How to Avoid Them
We’ve all been taught how to write properly since grade school. Grammar rules, sentence structures, writing styles and tone – we’ve heard of those before. With fast-flowing information, short attention span of readers, and the ability to read content through hand-held devices on-the-go, it’s getting harder and harder to capture and keep anyone’s attention. For business owners who maintains a blog, and even for professional web content writers, it can be quite a challenge and inevitably, mistakes will happen.

Not Knowing Your Audience
Who are you writing for? If you can’t answer this properly, then you shouldn’t be writing at all. Before you write a single word, know who you’re writing for, what their problems are, what interests them, what makes them sad or happy, and what wakes them up in the middle of the night.
By being able to answer these questions, you can craft the perfect content that’s going to prove valuable and relatable to them and will ensure your efforts are not put to waste.
Targeting keywords when writing content is a good idea. It helps search engines connect you to people searching for something related to your content. However, stuffing too many keywords to your articles even if it doesn’t make sense or fit naturally will be counter-intuitive as you no longer will be providing the information they are looking for, and you’ll be writing for search engines instead.
Not Using Subheads
According to this study, internet users read in an F-Shaped pattern. This means they focus more on the headlines, subheads, and the first few words of the paragraph than the rest of the content.
One possible reason for this is that the readers want to gather more information in a shorter amount of time, and good subheads give them an idea of what the incoming text is about. The information they can get from that brief scan can help them decide whether or not to read the whole piece.
Too Much Self-Promotion
When writing a blog post, refrain from talking about yourself and your business. Blog posts should be used for providing valuable information, and not to aggressively sell your products or services.
By being genuinely and actively answering your readers’ questions, you’re slowly moving them closer to the stage where they would love to purchase your product.
Focusing on Quantity and Not on Quality
It’s crucial to regularly update your blog or social media to make your content marketing effective. But many website owners take this advice to the extreme by focusing on the quantity of content they publish without any regards to quality. It’s better to produce 1-2 well-written articles per week that make your audience happily waiting for your next update than producing poorly-written articles every day that turn your readers off.
Even the greatest writers need an editor. No matter how good you think your content is, there is always a risk of grammar errors, spelling mistakes, or formatting issues that you might miss.
Writing for the web doesn’t require strict compliance with grammar rules. Sometimes, it’s even better to break some of these rules if it gets your point across easier. But it doesn’t mean we should be careless. Still, take the time to review your article at least a few times before hitting the publish button.
There’s a great chance you’ve seen other writers who have committed these mistakes or have done it yourself. Don’t feel guilty. Mistakes are inevitable and are a good way to learn and improve our writing skill. But before we can improve, we must first acknowledge.
